How to Work Out Your Values: A Simple Exercise

How to Work Out Your Values: A Simple Exercise

Now that we’ve discussed the why and how of values in setting and achieving goals from our previous blog, let’s dive into a practical exercise to help you discover your core values. It’s like a treasure hunt, but instead of searching for buried gold, you’re uncovering the golden values that define you.

Step 1: Choose Your Words

A great starting point is to select five words that resonate with you. These words should feel significant, almost like they’re tugging at your heartstrings. You might be wondering, “Where do I even begin?” Here’s a helping hand – a list of words from “Your Best Year Yet” by Jinny Ditzler, a goldmine for this kind of soul-searching:

Step 2: Reflect on Your Choices

Once you’ve picked your five words, it’s time to dig deeper. For each word, write down why you selected it and why it resonates with you. This is not just a simple exercise in word association – it’s an exploration of your inner self. Ask yourself questions like:

– Why does this word stand out to me?

– How does this value manifest in my life?

– Can I recall a moment where this value significantly influenced my decision?

This reflection helps you to connect the dots between abstract values and your real-life experiences.

Example: Applying the Exercise

Let’s say you chose ‘Compassion’. You might write, “I chose compassion because I find deep fulfillment in understanding and caring for others. This value guides me in my relationships and my professional life, where empathy and understanding are key.”

By completing this exercise, you’re not just jotting down words; you’re painting a picture of your core self. This self-awareness is a powerful tool in aligning your goals with your values.

By the end of this exercise, you’ll have a clearer picture of what drives you. These values become your guiding stars, helping to navigate the journey of goal setting and achievement. It’s like having a personal GPS for your life’s journey – one that’s calibrated to your deepest desires and aspirations. Now, with your values in hand, go forth and conquer those goals with newfound clarity and purpose!
