What if rates don’t come down any time soon?

What if interest rates stay high for longer?

Here’s a question we’ve been asked more than once lately:

“What if rates don’t come down any time soon?”

It’s a fair question.

Because right now, there’s still chatter about more rate rises in 2026.

Maybe one.

Maybe two.

And while savers don’t mind hearing that…

Mortgage holders feel it immediately.

Not in theory.

In cash flow.

In pressure.

In that quiet feeling of checking your bank account more often than usual.

I was speaking with a client this week who said:

“We can handle things now… but what if rates keep climbing?”

That’s the real fear.

Not today.

Tomorrow.

The uncertainty.

So we ran a stress test on their situation.

That’s something we do regularly with clients who need this.

We model different scenarios:

  • What happens if rates rise again?

  • What changes if expenses increase?

  • How much breathing room is there?

Because confidence with money doesn’t come from hoping.

It comes from knowing your numbers.

Here’s what higher rates are already doing and forecasted on repayments:

That’s the part people underestimate.

A small percentage move can mean hundreds… sometimes thousands… disappearing from your cash flow each month.

And when life already feels expensive?

That matters.

So what can you actually do?

We always come back to three things.

First: clarity.

Know exactly what’s coming in.

What’s going out.

And what buffer you actually have.

Second: systems.

Good banking structure and automation create stability.

When money has a job before it lands in your account, things feel calmer.

Third: pressure test the plan.

Don’t build a financial plan that only works when conditions are perfect.

Build one that still works when life gets messy.

It’s a bit like building a house.

You don’t build it hoping there’ll never be a storm.

You build it strong enough to handle one.

One quote I always come back to:

“Stress comes from uncertainty. Confidence comes from clarity.”

No one knows exactly where rates go next.

But you can prepare properly either way.

And that changes everything.
