Markets feel high… but that’s not the real risk.

What if I’m investing at the worst time?

May 01, 20263 min read

Is it still worth investing… or am I too late?

That question has come up a lot this week.

Usually followed by a quieter one people don’t say out loud:

“What if I’m buying right before everything falls?”

Makes sense.

In the last 30 days alone, the US markets have jumped hard.

The NASDAQ is up around 18%.

The S&P 500 over 12%.

But zoom out for a second…

Over the last 12 months:

The NASDAQ is up around 39%

The S&P 500 is up around 27%

Same market.

Different perspective.

And at the same time…

there’s still uncertainty in the world.

So your brain does what it’s wired to do.

It tries to protect you.

“Maybe wait.”

“Maybe it’s too high.”

“Maybe it’ll drop soon.”

I was speaking with a client about this exact thing.

They had money ready to invest.

But kept hesitating.

Not because they didn’t believe in investing…

They just didn’t want to get the timing wrong.

Then something interesting happened this week.

Some of the biggest companies in the world reported their results.

Alphabet (Google).

Microsoft.

Amazon.

Meta.

All of them beat expectations.

Different industries.

Different business models.

Same pattern.

They’re still growing.

Profits are still increasing.

That’s the part most people miss.

Markets don’t usually peak just because prices feel high.

They peak when businesses stop growing.

Right now?

The growth is still there.

But here’s where it gets tricky…

When markets rise, it feels like you’ve missed it.

So you wait.

And wait.

Until things feel “safe” again.

But “safe” usually looks like:

  • Positive headlines

  • Everyone feeling confident

  • Prices even higher

It’s a bit like standing at the airport watching a moving walkway.

You wait for it to stop before stepping on.

But it never stops.

So you just stand there… while everyone else slowly moves forward.

The goal isn’t to time the perfect moment.

It’s to be on the walkway.

Moving.

Consistently.

There’s a simple way we think about this:

  • Don’t focus on price.

  • Focus on progress.

  • You’re not buying a number on a screen.

You’re buying businesses that (hopefully) grow over time.

And that growth is what builds wealth.

One line I always come back to:

“Time in the market beats timing the market.”

Not because timing is impossible…

But because waiting for certainty usually costs more than getting started.

So if markets feel uncomfortable right now…

That’s actually normal.

It often means you’re standing right at the point where long-term investors step in…

While others stay on the sidelines waiting for a signal that never really comes.
