Interest rates, fuel, groceries, house prices… sometimes the hardest thing to manage is what’s happening between your ears.

Is the bad news starting to get to you?

September 25, 2026•5 min read

There is a lot of bad news around at the moment.

Interest rates are going up again.

The RBA has just increased the cash rate to 4.60%.

That is the highest it has been since 2011.

Fuel prices seem to climb every time you drive past a servo.

The supermarket bill keeps getting bigger.

Even your morning coffee seems to cost more.

And then you look at your home.

The great Australian dream.

For some people, it is worth less than it was a year ago.

Then you turn on the news.

More bad news.

Open social media.

More bad news.

Scroll again.

More bad news.

After a while, it starts to get to you.

And I want to share something with you that I have invested heavily in over the last ten years.

My own mindset.

I didn't do this because I wanted to become some sort of “mindset guru”.

I did it because I realised something pretty important.

If I am going to help people make good decisions with their money, I need to make sure I am operating at my best too.

Because clients don't just come to us when everything is going perfectly.

They come to us when they are worried.

When markets fall.

When interest rates rise.

When they are not sure what to do.

Sometimes they are carrying a lot more stress than they let on.

And if I'm going to help them navigate that, I need to be able to navigate it myself.

So for the last ten years, I have continued to invest in myself through coaching, learning and personal development.

And for the last two years, we have taken that a step further at 7Wealth.

Every week, our team spends time looking at why we do what we do.

Why we say what we say.

How we respond to challenges.

And how we deal with everything happening around us.

Because there is a muscle that is very easy to forget about.

Your mental muscle.

You can train your body.

You can train your business.

You can train your financial skills.

But if you don't train your mind, the outside world can start doing the training for you.

And right now, there is plenty trying to get your attention.

The news wants your attention.

Social media wants your attention.

The next interest rate prediction wants your attention.

The next property crash story wants your attention.

The next headline about fuel prices wants your attention.

And the problem is, you can spend your entire day reacting to things you can't control.

So what can you actually do?

Start by controlling where you put your attention.

You don't need to stop watching the news.

You don't need to ignore what is happening.

Just don't let it become the soundtrack to your entire day.

Talk to people you trust.

Get different perspectives.

Spend time with people who make you feel better, not worse.

And focus on the things you can actually control.

One of the biggest is your money.

Knowing exactly where you stand financially can be incredibly powerful.

What comes in?

What goes out?

What debt do you have?

What does your mortgage cost?

What do you own?

What are you investing?

How much do you need for the life you want?

Because uncertainty creates stress.

Clarity creates confidence.

And there is another really simple thing that has made a huge difference for me.

Gratitude.

Every day, take a moment to notice what is going right.

Your family.

Your health.

Your home.

Your friendships.

Your opportunities.

The fact that you woke up this morning.

It sounds simple.

Because it is.

But simple doesn't mean insignificant.

You can't always control what happens around you.

But you can control where you put your attention.

You can control how you respond.

You can control whether you have a plan.

And you can choose what you are grateful for.

I love the saying:

“Where attention goes, energy flows.”

Because what you focus on gets bigger.

Focus on everything going wrong and the world can feel like a very scary place.

Focus on what you can control and suddenly you have something you can actually do.

So yes, there is plenty of uncertainty around at the moment.

The RBA has made it clear that inflation is still too high and that it is prepared to increase rates further if needed.

But that doesn't mean we need to spend our lives worrying about what happens next.

We can't control the RBA.

We can't control petrol prices.

We can't control the news.

We can't control house prices.

But we can control our attention.

We can control our behaviour.

And we can control how prepared we are.

Sometimes the best investment you can make isn't in the share market.

It's in yourself.

Because the stronger you are on the inside, the better you can handle whatever happens on the outside.

Reading is helpful. Having a plan is better.
