Before Markets Open: What You Should Expect Today
Before markets open today, I want to prepare you for something simple.
There’s a high chance we’ll see markets drop.
With the current tensions involving Israel, the US and Iran, uncertainty is high. Around 20% of global oil supply moves through that region. When conflict risk rises, oil prices usually rise. Gold often rises too. Share markets often fall.
So if you check your super or investments today and see red numbers, that won’t be surprising.
And it won’t mean the plan is broken.
This came up for me early in my career during another global shock. I remember watching markets open lower and feeling that urge to react. It felt like action meant control.
But experience taught me something different.
Markets don’t like uncertainty.
But they do recover from it.
We’ve seen wars.
Financial crises.
Pandemics.
Each time, markets dropped first.
Each time, over time, they recovered.
Not in a straight line.
Not in a day.
But they recovered.
Our approach is simple:
Remove the hysteria.
Focus on the facts.
Stick to the strategy.
Your portfolio isn’t built on one company, one country, or one outcome. It’s diversified. Part growth. Part defensive. Built knowing that storms come.
Think of it like turbulence on a flight.
You don’t jump out of the plane.
You stay seated.
The pilot keeps flying.
Right now, what should you do?
Nothing.
(If you want to fill up the car before petrol moves higher, that’s practical. But investment-wise, nothing.)
If tensions ease quickly, markets can bounce quickly.
If this drags on, volatility may last longer.
But we take each day as it comes. Calm. Measured. Focused on facts.
If you’re a client, we’re already across this and monitoring it closely.
If we don’t currently work together and you’re unsure how exposed you are, that’s when a calm conversation helps.
